    1    COATINGS ARE “COOL”
        Roof systems consisting of materials that effectively reflect the sun's energy from the roof surface are known as “cool roofs”.

        Coatings are primarily bright white in color and have high emissivity, allowing the roof to emit the infrared energy and reduce the roof surface temperature by up to 100°F, thereby reducing the heat transferred into the building below. This helps to reduce energy costs and improve occupant comfort. Coatings appeal to building owners seeking green and sustainable roofing, as they help satisfy LEED requirements.

        Cool roofs reduce maintenance costs, increase the life of the roof, reduce urban heat islands along with air pollution and smog formation, reduce roofing waste added to landfills (7-10% of U.S. landfills are comprised of roofing waste), increase the effective “R” value of the insulation, increase the efficiency of roof-mounted HVAC units, slow premature aging of the roof (lower surface temperatures and UV degradation), and provide easier and safer installation than with hot-applied systems.

    3    Professor Steven Chu, the US Energy Secretary, said the unusual proposal would mean homes in hot countries would save energy and money on air conditioning by deflecting the sun's rays.

    7    In a wide-ranging discussion at the three-day Nobel laureate Symposium in London, the Professor described climate change as a "crisis situation", and called for a whole host of measures to be introduced, from promoting energy efficiency to renewable energy such as wind, wave and solar.

    9    The Nobel Prize-winning physicist said the US was not considering any large scale "geo-engineering" projects where science is used to reverse global warming, but was in favour of "white roofs everywhere".

    1    WARRANTY OPTIONS
        There are two types of warranties for roof coatings:
    1.    Manufacturer’s Material Warranty
    2.    System Warranty (Labor and Material)

        Warrantee periods can range from 5-20 years. Another option is the 10+10 warranty.

        A 10+10 warranty guarantees the roof coating for 10 years. After year 9, a professional roof inspection is performed along with cleaning and general maintenance (at the expense of the building owner). Once completed, a specified amount of additional coatings are applied and a new 10-year warranty is issued.

        Warranties are only available through contractors who have obtained certification as a KM Coatings Approved Applicator. Although roof coatings may look like ordinary house paint, successful long-term performance requires proper preparation, repair of leaks and ultimately proper selection of the correct primer and coating system.
